HYDROSCAN®  - Case Example - OFFSHORE

The offshore field Mittelplate is the largest and most productive German oil field situated in a depth range between 2,000 and 3,000 m under the North Sea shelf. It is under operation of the consortium RWE Dea and Wintershall.
The oil is trapped within jurassic sandstones which are dragged along a salt dome flank and sealed by claystones on the top.

Advanced geophysical investigations are used to improve the knowledge about the hydrodynamic characteristics and determination of further field extensions.
In 2011 a helicopter-borne seismo-electromagnetic HYDROSCAN survey was carried out. The Figure shows two track lines with a total length of about 16 km, covering a north-south part of the concession area.

From the continuous measurements the distribution of the seismo-EM spectral attribute HPP (HC Productivity Potential) is obtained and represented within a contour plot.

Based on these aero-geophysical seismo-EM results the following geological conclusions could be derived:

•    Presence of the oil reservoir is identified by increased HPP attribute values

Delineation of the oil/no-oil contact in the north is tagging the salt dome outcrop-line, while the transition in the south-west extends about 1 km more to the south than so far expected

Single HPP anomaly peaks are indicating local zones of raised reservoir transmissibility
